Chewy Tubes are an innovative oral motor device designed to provide a resilient, non-food, chewable surface for practicing biting and chewing skills.
Chewy Tubes were originally designed to be used with the Jaw Rehabilitation Program.
Therapists may select Chewy Tubes to use in treatment with individuals who are developing initial oral motor skills, or rehabilitating the jaw after surgery, trauma or stroke. Chewy Tubes are offered to children and adults as a safe and effective tool for practicing biting and chewing skills. Youngsters seeking additional proprioceptive input into the jaw also enjoy biting on Chewy Tubes. Children as young as nine months of age have enjoyed the tactile input offered by biting on Chewy Tubes.
Chewy Tubes are not recommended for use with children under nine (9) months.
Intended for individual use, Chewy Tubes offer a safe, non-toxic surface for developing biting and chewing skills. Chewy Tubes are latex-free and lead free. In addition they do not contain PVC or phthalates.
Chewy Tubes are available in several colours and sizes.
T-shaped Chewy Tubes are available in four different colours and sizes:
- Yellow: smaller size stem, suitable for babies (9-10months) or for persons whose jaw does not open properly
- Red: Medium-sized stem, suitable for a toddler or slightly larger jaw
- Green: Medium-sized stem, has a knobby surface for additional sensory input
- Blue: Firmest and biggest model, suitable for adolescents and adult-sized jaws
Key-shaped Chewy Tubes are available in two different sizes:
- Green: Sleek design
- Red: Knobby surface
P's and Q's are solid rather than tubular so they offer a firmer surface for biting than the red or yellow Chewy Tubes. The bitable stem of the P reaches back into the molar region sending appropriate proprioceptive input into the TMJ as the patient practices biting. Babies enjoy the Q extension for tongue exploration. For larger jaws, the larger Q offers a firm bilateral surface for jaw closure activities.
Chewy Tubes are intended for personal use under adult supervision.
Chewy Tubes should be checked before use and replaced when there are visible signs of wear. Cleaning can be done with mild soap and water.
